After finishing my MA in Costume Making, I went on to launch a freelance costume making business. It works on a contract basis and offers me an outlet of experimental and unusual creativity. I have found that creating for stage and performance offers an entirely different view to clothing and can include a wide range of construction techniques that would not be used in fashion manufacture.
My view on fashion is that it visually expresses how we live our lives and how we choose to express ourselves everyday, whereas costume is embodying an entirely separate persona that's crafted to convey a particular character. Fashion tends to be successful repeated designs whereas, costume requires many work hours, usually for one exceptional piece.
You may have noted that my dissertation work for MA Costume Making in included in this portfolio. This is because I chose to study the gap between fashion and costume as it is something that has always fascinated me. It resulted in the generation of the experimental alternate fashion brand: XaN Alternate Fashion.
